Prairie State Legal Services is a nonprofit organization that provides free legal help to senior citizens and low-income people in more than 35 counties in northern and central Illinois. Its board of directors primarily includes attorneys selected by local bar associations and low-income people selected by community groups. The organization deals with cases related to termination of essential medical care, food stamp denials, family abuse, bankruptcy, termination of visitation rights, wrongful evictions and supplemental security income benefits. Prairie State Legal Services additionally deals with issues concerning domestic violence, termination of housing subsidies and denial of special education services required for children with disabilities. It maintains a location in Rockford, Ill.
